Karenjy : The unique “Vita Malagasy” car

Mar 11 2025

Closed in 1993 and reopened in 2009 by Le Relais Madagascar, the Karenjy automobile factory is a source of pride for Madagascar. Today, the Malagasy brand is experiencing growing success thanks to its model, Mazana II.

Karenjy, born of Malagasy socialism

The Karenjy brand was born out of the socialist vision of President Didier Ratsiraka in the 1980s, during a “period of excessive investments.” In addition to establishing the Fiarafy automobile factory, a shipyard was built in Mananjary, and management of the Pangalanes Canal was resumed. However, the creation of the Hitsikitsika aircraft never materialized. All these projects were developed by the IMI (Malagasy Institute of Innovation).

Karenjy cars were produced between 1985 and 1990 but ceased entirely in 1993 during the Ratsiraka-Zafy Albert transition. The factory remained under legal protection for 15 years until Le Relais decided to relaunch production in 2009.

During its peak, Fiarafy produced three Karenjy models: Iraka, Mazana, and Faoka, with several versions including Kalesa, Lanja, and Jejo. Notably, in 1989, a one-of-a-kind Popemobile was specially built for Pope John Paul II's visit to Fianarantsoa. This vehicle has since been restored and entrusted to the Fianarantsoa diocese.

The revival of Karenjy by Le Relais Madagascar

A member of Emmaüs France and the Inter Réseaux de la Fibre Solidaire (IRFS), Le Relais arrived in Madagascar in 2008 with the mission of “developing socio-economic activities to create sustainable jobs for people living in extreme poverty.” The group operates across various sectors:

  • TARATRA sorting center
  • GASH’MLAY textile creation
  • AINGAVAO agricultural development
  • TIA mutual aid fund
  • FAKOFIA waste collection and recycling
  • Alternative hospitality and tourism
  • KARENJY automobile manufacturing workshop

Based in Fianarantsoa, the SOATAO mechanical and automotive workshop of Le Relais Madagascar resumed car production in 2009. The goal was to become the only true African automobile manufacturer, producing vehicles tailored to the Malagasy context (difficult roads, mid-grade fuel, etc.) with essential features: durability, reliability, economy, robustness, simplicity, and practicality.

This engineering hub comprises a team of around 85 people, prioritizing quality and innovation. Their seemingly impossible mission to relaunch the factory has been a success, as evidenced by the positive reception of Karenjy’s automobile collection: Lanja, Mazana, and Iraka. Today, only the Mazana II remains in production.

Where to buy a Karenjy car?

The Mazana II model is available in three versions: Endurance, Prestige, and Essentiel (sedan, utility, and 4x4). It is equipped with a DV6CM - Peugeot Citroën engine (4x4 version) with a 5-speed + reverse gearbox and a 60-liter diesel tank. The body is made of fiberglass and polyester laminate. The design is straightforward and minimalistic, and the interior can accommodate up to six people.

It is possible to visit the factory during a stop in Fianarantsoa. Karenjy cars are, of course, sold on-site, but the brand also collaborates with COMACAT (Malagasy Rubber Company) in Ankorondrano (Antananarivo). This dealer also supplies Karenjy with rubber parts, including engine mounts, silent blocks, seats, and more.
