On the Arte Channel The Pangalanes Canal in the spotlight

Mar 24 2025

The Pangalanes Canal will be highlighted on the Franco-German channel ARTE on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at 4:30 PM French time.

At Détours Madagascar, we remain true to our commitments by promoting the unique heritage of the Big Island. Recently, we managed the technical and logistical aspects of filming in Madagascar for the show Invitation au voyage on the Franco-German television channel ARTE.

The featured topics include some of Madagascar’s notable heritages, such as the Merina kingdom and its 12 hills, Sainte-Marie Island, and the Pangalanes Canal.

This program, hosted by Linda Lorin, has been broadcast from Monday to Friday at 4:30 PM since March 2017. Its goal is to inspire viewers to travel through escape, discovery, and culture. It provides an opportunity to explore or revisit places and artists that are part of our shared cultural, artistic, and physical heritage.

In brief: The creation of the Pangalanes Canal, initiated in the late 19th century, was one of the largest projects that left an everlasting mark on Madagascar—it is the Malagasy Suez Canal.

This man-made waterway remains a highly utilized route to this day. While the northern section of the canal is busy with canoes transporting passengers and supplies to the major port of Toamasina, the southern section is much less frequented.

Our journey begins in the southern part of the Pangalanes… We set out to discover breathtaking nature, nestled between forest and ocean.
