Belo sur Tsiribihina

Belo sur Tsiribihina is a small town located on the west coast of Madagascar, about 100 km north of Morondava. It is a fascinating destination rich in history. This area was the birthplace of the Sakalava Kingdom of Menabe, from the Volamena dynasty, founded by Andriamanetiarivo, the grandson of the famous King Ndremisara. The relics of these kings and their successors are preserved in a sanctuary, known as a zomba in Malagasy.

The name "Belo," which translates to "many have rotted," originates from the battles between the Merina soldiers sent by King Radama I to conquer the territory and the warriors of the Sakalava Kingdom defending their land. Two wars took place during that time: one in Belo sur Tsiribihina and the other in Belo sur Mer.

Belo sur Tsiribihina and the Fitampoha Ceremony

The Fitampoha is a ritual of the Sakalava dynasty of Menabe that involves bathing royal relics in the Tsiribihina River.

The relics consist of a pinky nail, occipital bone, and upper jaw canines collected from each king after their death. These are mixed with the lower jaw fang of a crocodile, specific types of wood, and gold coins. This combination is placed inside a carved wooden container shaped like a bull horn and adorned with glass beads.

Previously held every ten years, the Sakalava of Menabe now perform this ritual every five years.
