The Makay Massif - Guide Madagascar - Détours Madagascar

The Makay Massif

The Malagasy lands are filled with hidden treasures that sometimes require venturing off the beaten path to uncover. The majestic and mysterious Makay Massif reveals one of nature’s most beautiful masterpieces, shaped over thousands of years.

The Makay Massif, a biodiversity Sanctuary

The Makay is a mountain range stretching from north to south for nearly 175 km in southwestern Madagascar. Extending northward from Isalo National Park, the Makay lies between the Tsiribihina River in the north and the Mangoky River in the south. Its unique geography features plateaus of ruiniform sandstone carved by deep canyons, giving it an almost impenetrable character. Formed like a natural fortress, the Makay preserves a unique biotope, and its flora and fauna are exceptionally rich.

Hiking in the Makay Massif

With its maze of intricate canyons, the Makay Massif is a true Eden that Nature has taken its time to sculpt. The unique ruiniform sandstone of the Makay makes it an essential destination for an exploratory trip in Madagascar.
Still relatively unexplored, its deep gorges serve as refuges for various animal and plant species, most of which are endemic to the region. Traversing the thousands of kilometers of natural labyrinth offers an exciting adventure, revealing a nearly forgotten world. Amidst deep gorges and canyons of unparalleled beauty, a hike through the Makay Massif is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with nature.

Hiking in the Makay is also a human adventure. Teams of porters and trackers are the guardians and expert guides of this unique land. The Bara ethnic group, of Bantu origin, primarily raises zebu cattle.
