Anakao: A unique Malagasy tourist destination

Anakao welcomes you to the stunning Saint-Augustin Bay, located on the Tropic of Capricorn. Both wild and picturesque, this Vezo fishing village rivals other tourist destinations on the Big Island. While the vegetation may not be lush, its beautiful beaches, lagoons, translucent turquoise waters, and the hospitality of its residents make it a charming destination. For those seeking tranquility and solitude, Anakao is the perfect retreat.

A fishing village

A cosmopolitan Community

Situated about 40 kilometers from Toliara, Anakao stretches along the southwestern lagoon of Madagascar. It is formed by several semi-sedentary fishing villages, primarily home to Vezo fishermen and Tanala farmers. Its cosmopolitan population stems from migrations of the Mahafaly, Masikoro, and Merina peoples. Historically, it served as a key stopover for sailors navigating the southern part of the island. During your stay in Madagascar, you will undoubtedly appreciate the beauty and diversity of its people.

An endearing village

What makes this village so special, beyond its white sandy beaches and stunning landscapes, is the warm hospitality of its people. Most locals make a living through fishing, livestock farming, and tourism. Fishermen use traditional outrigger canoes with square sails. In and around the village, it’s common to see herds of zebu, goats, or sheep. Cassava and maize are also cultivated by the inhabitants.

A traditional lifestyle

The Vezo and Tanala communities place great value on traditions handed down from their ancestors. Tourism has not altered the local culture—**fady** (taboos) and restrictions are still strictly observed. Traditional fisherman's huts can be seen in the southern part of the village, interspersed with some modern foundations. At the end of the path lies a large Vezo cemetery. Ancestors hold an important place in the lives of the villagers, as is common across Madagascar. One striking feature in the cemetery is a tomb measuring 30 meters long by 6 meters wide.

A coastal paradise

A haven for swimmers and divers

The crystal-clear waters invite swimming, complemented by vast beaches. Dive into a giant natural aquarium filled with unique treasures—colorful fish, corals, and underwater vegetation come together in turquoise waters, creating a feast for the eyes. Anakao’s reputation soared after a rare coelacanth (a prehistoric fish species) was discovered here in 1995. This destination is a must-see during your Madagascar tour.

Two magnificent coral islands

Anakao is nestled between two coral islands: Nosy Ve, about 5 kilometers off the coast, and Nosy Satrana, located within the lagoon, 10 kilometers from the village. These islands make for excellent excursions accessible by boat or canoe. Quiet and unspoiled, they offer perfect spots for relaxation and snorkeling among vibrant marine life.

Enchanting Biodiversity

Although human presence on Nosy Ve is minimal today, many bird species, such as tropicbirds and red-tailed phaetons, have made it their home. Additionally, the island is an excellent spot for whale watching during the austral winter. Located slightly south of Anakao, Nosy Satrana is primarily inhabited by herons. Its ground is scattered with limestone debris from the fossilized eggs of the aepyornis, a giant extinct bird species. The refreshing waters around the island are perfect for swimming.

A timeless escape

Unforgettable scenes

A stay in this charming village provides a chance to disconnect from the frenetic pace of city life. The landscapes and daily scenes are simply captivating. Among the must-see spectacles is the return of Vezo canoes at sunset. Photography enthusiasts will delight in capturing the colorful canoes gently approaching the shore under an orange-hued sky.

Good to know

For centuries, Nosy Ve, located about 3 kilometers from Anakao, was home to slave traders, merchants, and pirates. The French settled there in the 19th century. Traces of their presence remain, such as the pools of the French Residence. Visitors are expected to respect the numerous fady on Nosy Ve, including sacred huts dedicated to the tromba (spirit possession cult).

Climate

Anakao enjoys pleasant weather year-round, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 29°C. Rainfall is concentrated in December, January, and February. The best months to visit are May, June, July, and August. Plan your Madagascar trip with a travel agency during this time to make the most of your visit.
