Radama Archipelago - Guide Madagascar - Détours Madagascar

Radama Archipelago

Comprising four islets, the Radama Archipelago is located 60 km from Nosy Be, in the Mozambique Channel. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters, this idyllic destination feels like a slice of paradise that’s easy to fall in love with.

Authentic Villages

Just south of the Ampasindava Peninsula, a chain of small peninsulas sets the stage for a picturesque scene of canoes, dhows, and schooners gliding with the rhythm of successive waves. Nosy Kalakajoro and Antanimora are simply stunning, with their beaches lapped by turquoise waters that invite swimming.

The inhabitants of the archipelago are heirs to an ancient tradition of shipbuilding. They have established small, picturesque villages and make their living from fishing for sea cucumbers and sharks, whose fins are highly valued in Asia.

At the Mercy of the Wind

Berafia once hosted the cultivation of export crops such as ylang-ylang and coffee. The authenticity of the largest island in the Radama Archipelago can still be seen in its remaining relics, including an old colonial house, an abandoned storehouse, and an aged tractor. Life on Berafia is shaped by the trade winds. These winds, blowing from east to west, dictate the pace of dhows and canoes heading out to sea for fishing.

At Berafia, fishermen leave the village early in the morning, carried by the Varatraza, or east trade wind, and return in the evening with the Talio, a west wind that blows in the afternoon.

A diver’s Paradise

Nosy Saba lies in the southernmost part of the archipelago. It stands out with its limestone rather than sandy terrain. The dazzling whiteness of its beaches and the stunning beauty of its coral reefs will leave you in awe. The water is so clear that the underwater treasures are visible without masks. Diving enthusiasts will undoubtedly enjoy this incredible adventure.
