Ampefy: A refreshing escape two hours from Tana

The Village

Situated two hours by road from Antananarivo, the village of Ampefy offers a rural setting perfect for relaxation. It’s an ideal stop for spending a few days in peace, away from the city's noise, around Lake Itasy. You’ll enjoy meeting the locals and farmers, always greeting you with a big smile. You’ll also come across herds of zebu cattle, which may seem intimidating at first but are completely harmless. Simply stay by the side of the path, and the herders will guide them with their whips, often smiling and greeting you as they pass. This unique experience is definitely photo-worthy—just ensure it doesn’t disturb the locals!

Lake Itasy and its fish

Lake Itasy, known for its abundance of fish, is the region's main attraction. Covering an area of 3,500 hectares, Madagascar's third-largest lake is situated at over 1,200 meters above sea level. It is the perfect spot for a canoe trip to or from the Virgin Islet. Ampefy also offers delightful opportunities for hiking or cycling to explore the lakes of Antohomadinika and that of Andranoratsy, as well as a few marshes.
Fishing enthusiasts and canoeing fans will especially enjoy their visit to the region. The scenery is stunning, featuring valleys carpeted with wildflowers. You’ll also appreciate the local markets, where you can buy the famous Itasy fish (mainly carp and tilapia), as well as fruits and vegetables that visitors eagerly snap up.

The Lily Waterfall

A visit to Lily Waterfall, in Antafofo, is a must during your stay in Ampefy. To fully appreciate the area's charm, it’s best to go on foot. The hike takes you through volcanic hills and small villages with red-earth houses. As you approach, the sound of rushing water grows louder, and the air becomes noticeably cooler. The waterfall is about 23 meters high, creating refreshing sprays of mist. Many legends surround these falls, including one about a "Vazaha" (foreigner) planter who lost his daughter Lily at this site. After fruitless searches, the villagers named the waterfall after her. Here, nature offers a spectacular display.

The geysers

The region is also home to stunning geysers in Amparaky. To reach them, you’ll travel 10 km on a paved road from Ampefy to Analavory, then take a 12-km dirt track. The site features a clayey area dotted with holes in the ground, from which water jets emerge. On hot days, visitors often stand near these jets to enjoy a refreshing cold shower (with clothes on and without soap). The water isn’t hot because these are not volcanic geysers but artesian wells, similar to volcanic geysers in Iceland and Norway. The locals have even built a small pool for children where the water is warm. Why not also try a clay massage while you’re there?
