Rock climbing

Did you know that Madagascar boasts some of the world’s most incredible climbing sites? These spots are renowned for being among the most beautiful on the planet. At Détours Madagascar, we can design a custom itinerary for you to climb at some of the best locations across the island.

Climbing spots in the North:

Vallée des Perroquets : Routes from 6a to 7c

Located in northern Madagascar near Diego-Suarez, this limestone rock face features vertical and overhanging profiles with holds such as pockets and concretions. Set amidst a stunning protected forest, it’s a 1.5-hour walk from Diego-Suarez to reach this climbing paradise.

Montagne des Français : Routes from 3 to 8a

Just a short drive from Diego-Suarez, followed by a 40–50-minute hike, this area offers 180 routes with profiles ranging from overhangs to vertical and slab climbs. The holds here are crimps. This limestone range overlooks Diego Bay and its iconic Sugarloaf, offering one of the most breathtaking views on the island.

Nosy Hara:  80 routes from 5 to 8a

A small paradise in the Diego-Suarez province, Nosy Hara is a climber’s dream with many routes yet to be established. After a day of climbing, relax on white sandy beaches and enjoy the Mozambique Channel. The profiles here are vertical and overhanging, with crimps and tufa formations as holds.

When to climb in the North?

Climbing is possible year-round, except during the rainy season (January and February). From March to December, island winds help mitigate the heat, making for a pleasant climbing experience. For Montagne des Français, the best season is from May to November.

The Tsaranoro cliffs in the South-Central Region:

Tsaranoro Massif

About 50 km from Fianarantsoa, the Tsaranoro Massif offers enormous granite walls reaching up to 800 meters in height. With approximately 30 routes ranging from 3 to 8b, it’s perfect for climbers of all levels, from beginners to experts. After climbing, the area is also an excellent spot for paragliding.

When to climb the Tsaranoro Massif?

The best period to climb in the south and the Tsaranoro cliffs is between March and December, with inter-season months (spring and autumn) being particularly favorable. From June to September, warm clothing is recommended as the area sits at an altitude of 900 meters.
