Scuba diving

The fifth largest island in the world (587,040 km²) is a true sanctuary of terrestrial and marine life, boasting 4,828 km of coastline. Madagascar is renowned worldwide not only for its lemurs but also for its diving spots in Nosy Be, as well as its pirates and humpback whales near Sainte-Marie.

Diving spots around here, each offering a unique experience. Everything on this island is extraordinary! Turquoise, crystal-clear waters? You'll find them in Madagascar. Coral reefs, colorful fish, large fish, sharks, dolphins, whales… All this can be admired during a tailor-made trip organized by Détours Madagascar!

The best diving season in Madagascar is between July and November. In Nosy Be, divers can explore exceptionally rich underwater environments. Snorkeling enthusiasts can spot manta rays, whale sharks, and turtles. At Sainte-Marie, humpback whales visit from July to October.

Madagascar’s coasts are ideal for diving throughout the dry season, from April to December. Water temperatures range from 25°C in July and August to around 30°C between November and May. Visibility remains between 10 and 30 meters year-round.

Whether diving or snorkeling, Madagascar’s marine life is extraordinary. Expect to encounter trevallies, groupers, barracudas, butterflyfish, batfish, surgeonfish, and more. Pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, and other dolphin species are visible year-round in Nosy Be, along with reef sharks, leopard sharks, and whale sharks. Green turtles and hawksbill turtles also add to the incredible biodiversity of Nosy Be's waters.

The best diving spots in Madagascar

Nosy Be

Undoubtedly THE diving destination in Madagascar, Nosy Be is the most popular and richest in marine life. Its chain of islets, pristine beaches, transparent waters, and excellent diving centers make it a must-visit. Snorkeling here is magical, offering the chance to swim alongside whale sharks and vibrant fish. Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Sakatia, Nosy Iranja, the Mitsio Archipelago, and the Radama Archipelago are just some of the many spots that promise unforgettable experiences. The spot nicknamed “4 Wrecks” near Nosy Komba is a must-see, though Sainte-Marie offers the best shipwreck dives!

Sainte-Marie

What better place for shipwreck diving than the waters off an island once home to pirates? Explore another world by visiting the wrecks of Cocoteraie and Léopard. With its naturally preserved lagoon, Sainte-Marie is a diver’s paradise, offering coral gardens teeming with marine life. Coral fish, marine turtles, pelagic fish… On sea excursions, you might even encounter the southern right whale, also known as the black whale, rarer and larger than the humpback whale. And you don’t need scuba gear to admire these majestic creatures.

The coasts of Tuléar

The southwestern coastline of Madagascar features breathtaking diving spots near preserved fishing villages that are difficult to access. The massive coral reef, stretching nearly 300 kilometers, provides an ideal haven for marine life. Destinations like Anakao, Ifaty, and Belo-sur-Mer are less frequented yet exceptional for diving. Stunning underwater landscapes await discovery, and humpback whales can also be spotted here!
