Lokaro Bay - Guide Madagascar - Détours Madagascar

Lokaro Bay

With its fine sandy beach and stunning coves, Lokaro Bay is one of the most beautiful spots to explore near Fort-Dauphin.
The main attraction in this area, located about 40 kilometers from Tolagnaro? Swimming with colorful fish, without a doubt!

Exploring the Bay

Lokaro Bay is one of the highlights of the southern Madagascar tourist circuit. From the village of Evatraha, near Lake Ambavarano, you can easily access this remarkable site. Expect a 3 to 5-hour hike to reach it, all while enjoying idyllic landscapes along the way.

Beyond the canals and lagoons, you’ll find a small cove perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The scenery is breathtaking, with Saint-Louis Peak reflected in the basin’s waters.

Both beautiful and untamed, Lokaro Bay is often compared by sailors to Ireland, while others see it as reminiscent of Brittany. As you navigate through the arroyos, you’ll pass through marshy vegetation filled with arums, pandanus, and Ravinala. Wild ducks and kingfishers may greet you along the way. It’s also common to encounter fishermen with their traditional dugout canoes on the shore. This ecosystem offers a glimpse of the flora and fauna of the Pangalanes Canal.

Looking for adventure and thrills? Take the panoramic trail! After about two hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at an exceptional viewpoint over the region. This excursion also provides the chance to discover astounding flora, including towering aloes and flowering euphorbias.

Lokaro Bay is a true escape. Enjoy picnics and swims in crystal-clear waters! Indulge in moments of relaxation in an enchanting setting near Sainte-Claire Island, known for its fine sands. The sight of traditional dugout canoes will brighten your day, along with the stunning sunset.
