Nestled in the heart of a mid-altitude rainforest, the Vohimana Reserve is a natural gem located just a few hours east of Antananarivo. Covering more than 2,000 hectares, the reserve boasts stunning biodiversity.
The Vohimana Reserve is currently managed by the NGO *Man and the Environment*. After years of slash-and-burn agriculture—the local population’s primary means of sustaining themselves for rice, fruit, and vegetable cultivation—the NGO stepped in 15 years ago to protect this precious ecosystem. In agreement with the local communities, they asked villagers to cease this practice. In return, the NGO provides them with employment opportunities.
The reserve offers primary forests, waterfalls, and medicinal plants. Various trails are available, tailored to your interests and hiking experience.
For nature enthusiasts, the botanical trail is ideal. The reserve is home to over 160 medicinal plants, and local guides will explain their uses and virtues.
The eastern rainforest is renowned for hosting the iconic Indri, the largest lemur and one of the few primates that sing. The reserve also harbors six nocturnal and five diurnal lemur species, which you can observe on day or night tours. Additionally, Vohimana is the world’s richest site for endemic frog species, with over 70 identified.
To support the local population and diversify the reserve’s offerings, several associations operate within Vohimana and welcome visitors.
Perched on a mountainside, the Naturalist’s Lodge offers a fully immersive nature experience. The rustic yet comfortable wooden bungalows and dormitories provide a cozy stay. Meals and breakfasts are served under a large roofed area, open to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
For the adventurous, a two-day trekking and bivouac experience in the forest is also available. The lodge is a peaceful haven amidst lush vegetation, perfect for total disconnection from the modern world!
