The Makay massif through the eyes of Tolo: A shared passion

At first, our encounters with the Bara—the ethnic group living in these regions—were challenging. They were wary and found it hard to believe we were there solely to discover the beauty of this nature. The idea that we came from the outside with no ulterior motives but to explore this unique place was surprising to them. Patiently, it took us three expeditions to gain their acceptance and demonstrate our good intentions. Our approach was transparent and genuine.

Together with trackers and porters, we traversed the Makay Massif in every direction. Along the way, we had encounters, shared extraordinary experiences, and gradually exchanged our perspectives and skills. Mutual respect and trust developed naturally over time. Today, the Bara families on the eastern foothills of the Makay consider me their friend. Some even regard me as a father figure, respectfully calling me Dada Tolo or Papa Tolo. Yet, we are not of the same ethnic group.

The Bara are of African Bantu origin, semi-nomadic zebu herders. I, on the other hand, am Merina, from the central highlands, where we work the land and have Melanesian roots. While we are all Malagasy, we’ve made real discoveries about one another. The reciprocal trust that has formed has allowed me to deeply understand their customs and language, which differ from my own.

One evening by the fire, we discussed the future of our country and the threats we face. I realized that the Bara are now the primary defenders of their environment. Increasingly, and especially among the younger generations, they are advocating for the protection of nature. This awareness is, to me, the most rewarding outcome. It gives true meaning to my presence alongside them for over a decade.

Today, the entire Makay Massif has become a New Protected Area. At Détours Madagascar, we are actively involved in its conservation and management alongside Naturevolution, an organization appointed by the Malagasy government. "Conservation must be carefully managed and take into account everyone’s aspirations."
